22 mothers in hunger strike at immigrant detention center

The New York Times recently ran an article about a group of mothers fighting back in one of the few ways available to them. The 22 mothers are holding a hunger strike in an immigration detention center that is about a two-hour drive west of New York City.

The women are trying to draw attention to the U.S. government's detention policy. The women are migrants from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala who are seeking asylum in the United States from what they say is danger from extreme violence back home.

They previously conducted a 16-day hunger strike last month.

One detainee told the Times that she doesn't know how long she and her son will be held and whether or not they will eventually be released or deported. "The truth is, I'm in limbo," she said.

Homeland Security chief Jeh Johnson said in August that the average stay in the family detention centers is 20 days.

"I have been here for 320 days," said a 26-year-old Honduran mother detained with her 2-year-old son.

Johnson's claim angered the detainees, the newspaper said, prompting their renewed hunger strike.

Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey said the families held at the detention center have fled "unspeakable horrors in their countries of origin" and hope to make better lives here. Instead, they are held captive for months at a time with no indication of their eventual fates.

According to court decisions, the women also are not provided with legal representation and do not even have the right to sue.
