Changes in immigration demographics

Conventional wisdom tells us that Mexican migrants (who are most often male) are pouring into the United States. They come here for jobs, or so it has long been believed.

But the demographics at the border are changing. The U.S. government is saying that those who are intercepted at the border are today overwhelmingly Central American families. Many of those coming here today are in search in asylum rather than jobs.

Officials say that many Central American migrants turn themselves in at the U.S. border, asking for protection and asylum. Agents are obligated to process the requests rather than deport the asylum-seekers or turn them away.

Authorities say much of the influx is from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says that a wall on the southern border would not in and of itself prevent illegal immigration. He says that "ultimately, the solution is long-term investment in Central America to address the underlying push factors in the region."

A migrant rights expert says the reason for push northward of Central American citizens continues to be a combination of violence in the region and crushing poverty.

For many immigrants, the possibility of life in the United States is an opportunity to raise their children in peace and prosperity. A Staten Island attorney can help those seeking asylum as well as those who face deportation.
