Stars reveal their immigration stories

The struggle to come to the United States, gain residency or citizenship can be a lonely one. It can seem like you are on your own and that few people will understand. It can be helpful in those moments to remember that many others have walked the same path you are on.

Some very familiar names have shared their stories of immigration and struggle and how they persevered. Film and music stars such as Salma Hayek, America Ferrera, Diane Guerrero and Wilmer Valderrama, among others, told had their immigrant tales highlighted in a recent issue of People magazine.

Hayek's screen career has many highlights, perhaps topped by her Academy Award-nominated performance in 2002's "Frida."

"I was an illegal immigrant in the United States," she told a reporter. She said that she has endured discrimination in her life in the U.S.

"It was inconceivable to American directors and producers that a Mexican woman could have a lead role," she said. Clearly, bigotry can be difficult to deal with, but in Hayek's case it did not present a hurdle she could not overcome.

Valderrama was born in the U.S., but his family moved to Venezuela when he was just 3. Years later, he returned as part of an immigrant family. Though they struggled with poverty, he says they never lost their pride or their belief that America was their home.

Guerrero is known for prominent roles in several television series, as well as her stand-out role in immigration advocacy. Her parents were deported when she was 14 years old; a searing experience documented in her book "In the Country We Love."
