Citizenship process can be costly

For some, their dream is to come to America and try their hand at the American Dream. Immigration can be a costly and lengthy process, and trying to cut corners can have detrimental effects. If a person is deported, he or she may not get the opportunity to ever gain U.S. citizenship. Individuals in New York who wish to become U.S. citizens should understand the processes and costs associated with it.

First, a person who wishes to become a citizen must become a legal permanent resident. The process for permanent residency can take years. During that time, a person can expect to potentially spend thousands of dollars. After finally attaining the permanent resident status, he or she must remain in that status for five years.

Sometimes, during the immigration process, a person can be deported. After deportation, a person can wait up to 10 years before he or she is allowed to return to the United States and apply for citizenship again. Some have families back in the United States and become separated. Others are no longer familiar with their home countries. Still, other individuals attempt to petition to come back sooner because they are responsible to care for children back in the United States.

Once a person achieves permanent residency, he or she can then apply for citizenship. Part of the process is a citizenship exam. Costs for applying for citizenship start at $725. The path to becoming a citizen is long and challenging, but for many, it is a worthy risk. Having a little help can always be beneficial; many in New York choose the aid of an experienced immigration attorney through the process.
