Justice Department implementing changes in US immigration law

A recent focus of the current administration is overhauling the way that new individuals are introduced into the country. Leaders have called for changes in US immigration law that will result in lower levels of illegal immigration. Some proposed changes include the hiring of more immigration judges to handle cases in New York and the rest of the country.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is the leader of the Justice Department. This department handles all immigration cases in a court system that is separate from criminal and civil courts. The Attorney General serves as a type of one-man Supreme Court in disputed cases.

Courts decide whether a person is in the United States legally and whether he or she has the right to remain in the U.S. The problem lies in the slowness of the process. Because immigration courts are overburdened, cases can take years, allowing individuals to obtain work permits in the meantime. Other individuals had legal status originally but lost it in some way. One recommendation for making the process more efficient is to hire more judges, allowing the cases to move through the system faster.

In New York, more immigration judges could mean that cases are processed more quickly and efficiently. US immigration law is facing many challenges and changes, and at times, the changes could affect a person's status in the United States. Any person facing an immigration case may wish to reach out for more help. An experienced immigration law attorney can provide insight and legal guidance for those who are interested.
