Permanent resident: Docuseries focuses on immigrant NBA star

Many people from around the world move to the United States in pursuit of a better life. The U.S., and New York in particular, has always been a haven for people who want to start anew in the land of opportunity. One of those people is former National Basketball Association player, Felipe Lopez. He immigrated to this country in the late 1980s to become a permanent resident. A new documentary series is featuring his story as an immigrant from the Dominican Republic.

The series, titled "The Dominican Dream," talked with Lopez about growing up in Santiago, Dominican Republic, moving to the United States, and ending up in the NBA in the late 1990s. He arrived here in 1989 with his sister, after his parents and one sibling had relocated a few years prior, with one brother following a few years later. Lopez says that his family wanted what many do -- a chance at the American dream.

Lopez drew attention for leading his New York high school to basketball state championships, but his family felt it was important to complete college rather than go straight to the NBA. Though many people think he made a mistake in listening to his family, Lopez has no regrets. He measures his success by how many lives he's able to change, which he does through his work with NBA Cares. The organization is focused on community outreach, working with schools and prison inmates.

Felipe Lopez's story shows how so many people come to this country to make the lives of others better in addition to their own. Immigrants who want to become a permanent resident in the United States may have concerns about the process. Those concerns may best be addressed by an experienced immigration attorney who can explain all of the rights and options available.
